the red-eye out from SJC to AUS
there was a huge layer of haze in the sky over the southwest last night. dust storms from mexico? a wildfire from southern california? i slept through the mojave desert and the grand canyon before waking up over las cruces, nm. the lights sprawled out like a cross-section of an ant mound, trailing along highways in the city and dying out a few miles outside the city limits. even at night, the haze was still visible, existing as a fuzzy white region between the sparse lights below and the sky above. and what a sky...there were many more stars visible than what i'd been seeing from the bay area nights recently. despite the indoor cabin light pollution and the standard airline passenger window, i could see dozens of stars where i'd probably only seen a handful or two. i wonder if the sky view from 33,000 ft compared to that of ein gedi, israel, with its pristine air and undisturbed night sky (though near the lowest place in the world, and thus susceptible to atmospheric distortions). below me, a T-intersection passed, lit by 11 streetlights and surrounded by darkness for at least 10 miles around.
i really need to fly at night more often.
